Unforgettable Memories Of High School Football

And the price a kid pays to play

Four high school football players with gold helmets and black & white padded uniforms with bold white numbers, are walking arm and arm to the center of the football field where referees are standing to start the game with a coin toss. Crowds of cheering parents and schoolmates are in the background sitting on bleachers.

In the defense huddle, we all agreed, offensive third down and eight-yards for a first at the fifty-yard line… blitz the quarterback. Our plan of action was clear: linemen close off the middle; left and right linebackers converge on the quarterback from both sides of the line. The objective is to crush the quarterbacks protected pocket before the offensive wide receivers can complete their routes and sack the quarterback before he can complete a pass.

In unison, “Ready, Break!”

We all took our positions. “Two, twenty-two, hike.” The ball hit the quarterback’s hands. In a fraction of a second, our defensive linemen collide with their offensive line. In that same instance of time, we, the defensive linebackers, blitz towards the quarterback from each side of the engaged linemen’s battle. I charged in from the right, Bill charged in from the left. With a quick glance left, I eyed Bill deftly sidestepping a last second attempted block. My path is clear. The quarterback slightly drifts right within the pocket, still protected by his offensive linemen. I pick up speed.

To me, that quarterback’s mine and I shoot forward unimpeded at full speed. Within four feet of the quarterback, I lean forward and lunge with my arms outstretched — Superman
